Ancient Nemea was not a settlement; the area only housed sports facilities, the temple and all the necessary buildings and infrastructure to organise the games, but it never had permanent residents, except for a few priests. Naturally, during the games, a crowd of athletes and people all over Greece gathered in the area. Ancient Nemea hosted the famous ancient games called “Nemean Games” every two years. The Nemean Games were burial games in honor of Zeus and the Seven at Thebes; for this reason, the judges wore black robes, interpreted as a sign of mourning.
