The Miaouleia are organised every year in Hydra in late June (17 to 25 June 2016).
This is a 3-day festival dedicated to Andreas Miaoulis who played a key role in the struggle of the Greeks against the Turks, during 1821-1827.
The festival includes music and dance events, athletic contests and a colorful array of thousands of fireworks in the harbor of Hydra, during the last night of the Festival. The Miaouleia is a popular annual maritime celebration, attracting dozens of boats, sailboats, inflatable vessels, and yachts to the island’s small harbor.
Hydra is the island of artists, as it has been a place of inspiration for painters, poets, writers, musicians, as well as a place of residence for many of them. Noble, picturesque and at the same time cosmopolitan, Hydra is a favorite destination for short getaways.
In July, an International Puppet Festival is organised, with the support of the Municipality and the Ministry of Culture. It is jointly organised by Greece and Sweden and it is open to everyone, overcoming all boundaries of age and cultural differences.
It is the only festival with open entrance where performers participate for free.
Although the festival started tentatively, it was supported with great enthusiasm by Melina Merkouri. Many friends also helped, especially Mr. Eberchar Ebner.
A Puppet Theatre play called “The Gift” will be presented during the Miaouleia, on Saturday 18 June, by the National Theatre of Northern Greece.
Leonidas Kavakos is coming to Hydra serving a good cause.
The great virtuoso and globally acclaimed violinist Leonidas Kavakos, voted in April 2016 as the best musician in the world in the field of classical music, will perform works for violin and piano along with the well-known Italian pianist Enrico Pace. The concert will no doubt be an excellent experience for all attendees. The concert will take place on Saturday 20 August 2016 at 21:00, in the courtyard of the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary, and, like every year, all proceeds will go to the Kouloureio Hospital in Hydra.
