Ancient Assini

Back

The archaeological site of Assini, a place mentioned by Homer, consists of the citadel, which was built on a triangular rocky hill facing the sea, the surrounding area and the hill of Barbouna to the West. Excavations have uncovered settlements as well as cemeteries dating back to the Early Helladic, Middle Helladic, Mycenaean, Geometric, Archaic and Hellenistic periods and the major Mycenaean necropolis of Barbouna. The walls of the citadel with the tall tower date back to the Hellenistic years (3rd century BC) The citadel was restored both in the Early Byzantine period and in the Second Venetian Domination period. At the time of the Italian occupation, fortification constructions were applied to the citadel.
